On Politically Correct Wasting of Our Money

Have you see the latest Ontario Government commercial?

It’s supposed to be about Ontario’s 150th anniversary.  Where is the credit for those who made it a great place for the past 150 years and made it a society capable of welcoming and accommodating all of these recent waves of immigration?

Where are the old people?  Where’s the farmer from Owen Sound or Eastern Ontario?

You want to show immigrants?  What about the immigrants from Italy, Poland, Yugoslavia, Scotland, Ireland, Greece, and Ukraine that came after World War II and built this province?  Where’s the old Italian bricklayer or the Greek store owner?  Where’s the autoworker in Windsor, the guy operating a snow plow in Timmins?  I don’t see one Indian – half our doctors in this province.  Not a single Jew, heaven forbid we show Jewish people in a government video.  Evil Zionists, that wouldn’t go over too well with our leftist crowd.

The only white people in the video is a gay dude and his boyfriend and a teacher who has only one arm!

It’s such a blatant homage to politically correct multi-cultural feel-goodisms.  I feel sick watching it knowing our tax money is paying for not only its creation but for it to get air on national networks in prime time.   This from a government that is massively in debt, lagging in REAL infrastructure spending (sorry, day care spaces don’t count despite what the government says) and providing <1% economic growth per annum.

Where are the priorities?  Is this what it has come to that our governments feel it’s their primary role to make us feel good about ourselves?  Moral preening never put food on anyone’s table, built a single bridge or provided a bright future for our children.

I can’t wait to see the Ontario Liberals turfed.  Trouble is I have no faith that Mr. I Had a Speech Impediment Oh Boo Hoo will do much differently as Premier.  He’ll fall into the same trap a lot of Conservatives do – they’ll think they’re going to be the government for a nice long spell if they just play it cool when instead they should be in a hurry to burn 70% of the government machinery to the ground so when the Liberals or NDP do get back into power it’s just a charred ruin incapable of wasting our money.

On Being Wrong

Well, I underestimated that. I take solace in the knowledge that I was not the only one – practically nobody “in the know” got this right. Nate Silver, time to take your website down, pal.

I’m schizophrenic today; on the one hand I revel in the absolutely distraught Left. It’s fantastic. The snobs so really love mocking us and trying to reform us, cure us of our wrong-think that it’s only fair, it’s karma, that they are borderline suicidal today. On the other hand though, it was pretty reckless of Republicans to nominate a buffoon and it was almost as reckless for 48% of Americans to elect him. I really think we’re in for a long period of race riots, protest marches and civil disobedience that will be unprecedented in the history of the West. That’s not good.

Looking for silver linings, my biggest hope going forward is that Trump makes good on his backroom deal to nominate Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court, putting a young, brilliant, pro-life constitutionalist on the bench for a long time. And I really, really hope he buries the hatchet with Paul Ryan and adopts Ryan’s entitlement reforms which may be the only way America avoids going bankrupt.

But will Trump cancel free trade deals? I’ll believe it when I see it. One minute he says he will, the next minute he’s offering Britain a free trade deal after Brexit.  Will he deport 11 million Mexicans? Again, I’ll believe when I see it. Will he team up with Putin and Russia to wipe out ISIS? Yes, that I think is happening. I would not buy stock in ISIS or Al-Queda or North Korea right now, that’s for sure. Will he prosecute Hillary Clinton? Nah, I think he’ll let that go so the doddering old crook can fade away.

Will all of these American celebrities pick up and move to Canada? Hardly.  Maybe one.

In other words, it’s not going to be the end of the world. Everyone will be fine. Except for maybe the Hollywood douche bags, left wing media and public sector unions. I hope you all stay miserable for a long time, assholes, you were owed a comeuppance.

On Shooting Survivors in the Countryside

From the National Review last year;

 “…This is not about “justice”; it’s about crushing the enemy beneath their holy heel. Progressives have chosen an ideology of total warfare. They aren’t satisfied with compromise. They aren’t satisfied with surrender. They aren’t satisfied until they are roaming the conquered countryside shooting survivors. And since progressives’ battle lines are always bounding forward, eventually everyone will end up in the crosshairs.”

Everyone. That includes you, Ellen DeGeneres. No, no, we won’t hear about how you were a progressive pioneer, one of the very first out-of-the-closet lesbians in Hollywood. How dare you post a photo-shopped picture of you riding Usain Bolt? A joke? Check your privilege, woman. Based on the privilege arithmetic you have no business trying to make a joke at the expense of a black man.

Ellen DeGeneres:

White = +1000

Woman = -500

Very rich = +500

Lesbian = -500

Total Privilege Score = +500

Usain Bolt:

Black = -1000

Man = +1000

Able Bodied = +100

Cis Gendered Straight = +250

Total Privilege Score = +350

Uh oh. It looks like you are more privileged than Usain Bolt, Ellen. Walk that tweet back, in a hurry, lest you be called a racist.

Ah, but the Progressives aren’t quite done roaming the conquered countryside, shooting survivors. Who else is out there – wait, what about the Olympics? Yes, let’s attack not just the Olympics but the whole idea of separate athletic competitions for men and women.

Just take a listen to this clip from the wonderful leftist fantasy land called CBC Radio. If you can make it far enough, at about the 18 minute mark the lunatic professor from the University of Western Ontario claims that women could successfully compete against men in lots of sports, like… ski jumping. OK, let’s look at her claim; the world record for men’s ski jump is 252.5m.  For women it is 200m.  That’s a difference of over 50m.  But whatever let’s not let actual facts get in the way.   She being a “scientist” and all.

How about we look at the marquee event of the Olympics, the 100m sprint?  For a man to qualify to compete in the Olympics, he must run a time of 10.16s or less.    Florence Joyner-Griffith’s women’s world record time from 1988 was 10.49s and it is widely accepted that she was using steroids at the time.  With that time, which has remained unbeatable for almost 30 years, she wouldn’t even qualify for the Olympics in the men’s division.

But again, whatever – you win! Let’s get rid of all the hand wringing about Castor Semenya’s hypoandrowhateverism and her let’s get rid of gender classifications in sports. Instead we’ll do it by blood chemistry profiles. Let’s end this bullshit. We test everyone and you compete in a category appropriate to your testosterone levels;

Category 1: 0-400 ng/dl (nanograms/deciliter)

Category 2: 400 – 1200 ng/dl

Category 3: 1200+

I’ve deliberately increased the upper threshold of the lower category, since men are typically 345-1190 ng/dl, so let’s assume there are some women that have naturally higher levels of testosterone and some men with naturally lower, i.e. as you get older men tend to have lower testosterone levels… so why not have a 50 year old man competing against 25 year old woman in wrestling? Same testosterone levels right? Even competition, right? And Category 3 … load yourself up guys and gals! Unlimited ‘roids, GHG, etc. What excitement that would be! It’d be like watching Marvel superheroes battle in real life.

Let’s roam the countryside some more.

Here’s a story about how millennials are, as a generation, having less sex than any generation in the past 60 years. Whoa, how can that be? I thought this was the age of the hook-up culture and free-flowing sexuality. But one guy offers an explanation;

“Third-wave feminists seem to be crazy, saying that all men are participating in this rape culture.” He opts for porn instead. “It’s quicker. It’s more accessible. What you see is what you get.”

It’s a disaster. I am not a historian, but it strikes me as a new Victorianism.  One of the main reasons was the inability for young men to navigate modern social rules for engaging the women, so they’d just as soon sit home and masturbate watching porn.  Sexless lesbian relationships are on the rise because “women” cannot find “men” that they can tolerate.

I always operated with the belief that what most people really really really wanted from life was to be happy, to experience joy.

How stressful is life if you have to tip toe through a minefield with every tweet or comment afraid that you might inadvertently be called a racist, sexist, bigot or homophobe?

Who will sticking men and women against each other in sports competition make happy?  The female athletes?  No, it will make the majority of female athletes who have no desire to take drugs in order to stay level with men pretty miserable, to the point where they’ll drop out.

How happy are young people so afraid of the opposite sex because they don’t know the rules of engagement?

The only people these things make happy are the tiny minority of progressives thinking Thank Gaia we’ve struck a blow for social justice.   But even then for how long exactly do they gain a feeling of happiness?  When they stop for a second and realize they’re still not happy, instead of some self-reflection and wondering if they’re wasting their energies, they instead think they’re unhappy because we haven’t gone far enough yet. Let’s go find some more survivors to shoot in the countryside.

Update:

It never ends. Congratulations Justin Trudeau, you’re being shot at also.

On Diversity, Segregation, Cultural Appropriation and Multi-Culturalism

On the one hand you have the supposed forces of diversity; take for example the female German politician who neglected to report her own rape at the hands of three Arab migrants because she was afraid of the racial backlash against Arabs that reporting her crime might provoke. Only after there were subsequent attacks was her friend able to convince her to come forward to the police with her own story. She certainly signaled her virtues to the world – it was more important for her to avoid potentially negative characterizations of a specific race than protect other women from the same fate. It’s as though had she come forward she would be the bad person, not her attackers. Multi-culturalism practiced as a doctrine for being a good quiet victim. It’s not the victim blaming feminists so decry, but it’s close; it’s simply on the hierarchy of grievances and victim-hood, Muslims rank higher than women.

But then you have the forces of segregation; Black Lives Matter, Idle No More, etc. Ever wonder what it is exactly that these people want? As a Canadian this ridiculousness is particularly insulting; we are not a country with anywhere near the history of racism that the US has, so why is this abomination being imported from that country? Sure, we have done some bad things as a nation to First Nations, interning Japanese and refusing Jewish refugees during WWII and such, no Western nation has a flawless record on that front. No serious person would argue that we are a country free of racism, sexism, homophobia et al, but you cannot convince the majority that racism against blacks or other identifiable groups is either “systemic” or endemic in Canada, or in Toronto particularly.

One idea that gets pounded is the idea that white people, because of their “privilege” cannot understand the condition and lives of black people or any other visible minority in our country. That is intellectually absurd. By extension then how could a black person understand the life of say, a Chinese immigrant? How could the straight Chinese immigrant understand the life of gay Chinese immigrant? How could that gay Chinese immigrant understand the life of that trans-gendered Aboriginal wo/man? How could that trans-gendered Aboriginal wo/man understand the life of a paraplegic lesbian Muslim from Pakistan? How can I understand my neighbor? He has a teenage daughter and lives 25m north of where I live, his perspective on life must be different than mine… and on and on.

At some point if you carry that argument to its logical conclusion you could argue that it is impossible for any of us to understand each other, because we are individuals. We all develop as persons with our own experiences that colour who and what we are and determine our cognitive biases. For a society to function successfully we have to accept that others will be able to, for the most part, understand us and our concerns. So when you say that that is impossible then what these people argue for is segregation; the ability to exist under a separate set of laws and conditions. There doesn’t have to be physical separation of groups to have segregation, all it requires is that there are different rules for different people. And when you provide different rules for one group then every group wants its own rules. Including whites who then turn to a Donald Trump in the US and argue, hey it’s our turn for special treatment.

Perhaps it’s not all that different from the German politician who didn’t want to report her Arab rapists – she believed that they, because of their identity, should be allowed to operate under a set of different expectations for allowable behavior. This is what progressive white guilt has created; a society that every day seems more and more hell-bent on dividing into little identity groups, white, black, straight, gay, woman, single, married, native, migrant, Muslim, Christian, atheist, kids, no kids… nothing approaching a nation or unifying culture.

Unifying culture? What a quaint idea. Here’s Justin Timberlake, a pop star that does “black” dance moves and emulates Michael Jackson wherever and whenever possible. He tweets in support of a blatantly racist speech made by a black actor at the BET awards and gets hit with a request to stop appropriating black culture. What? Should we whites then volley back with blacks should stop appropriating “white” culture in the form pianos, keyboards, guitars, brass horns… recording equipment? Turntables? Records? CDs? Where is this headed?

You’d think the left would applaud cultural appropriation. Isn’t cultural appropriation is just another word for multi-culturalism, which as we’ve discussed, is a key goal of the left… but it also is simultaneously a tool of oppression by the white Patriarchy? What? Is this an example of “intersectionality” or whatever they call this crap when they teach it in universities? I can’t keep up.

Two hundred years from now we can only hope people will look back on this time in history and laugh at what utter morons we all were.

On Virtue Signaling

Who remembers the 2011 Vancouver Stanley Cup hockey riot from a couple of years ago? The Canucks lost in game seven of the finals to the Boston Bruins and then fans in Vancouver promptly rioted and, in the end, nearly 300 people were convicted of crimes during the riot but many more escaped any charges because they couldn’t be identified. Four people were stabbed, hundreds wounded, nine police officers hurt and property damage was over $4 million including widespread looting.

There was a lot of hand wringing after the fact about the identities of these rioters; generally young but university educated, employed and seemingly decent persons in their normal day lives. So the explanations evolved to the whole event being a narrative on what a spoiled, entitled, and moral-less generation millennials have become. But that didn’t explain everything; there was quite a bit of discussion about mob mentality, crowd psychology and how people can be swept up in the spirit of a riot and lose their common sense and moral bearings.

From Gustave Le Bon, who was a leader in the analysis of mob psychology:

“Crowd behavior is heavily influenced by the loss of responsibility of the individual and the impression of universality of behavior, both of which increase with the size of the crowd.”

There is clearly some reciprocity at work; persons looking to relieve themselves of responsibility actually look for crowds to become part of, they embrace crowds. Hence why the “good” kids in Vancouver, when they saw a riot brewing, a crowd with ignoble purpose they didn’t run the other way or try to stop it even, they surrendered to it and fell in. Because it gave them the feeling they were absolved of responsibility.

All of which brings us to “virtue signaling”… You know what virtue signaling is; the changing your Facebook profile pic to the colours of the French or Belgian flag when there’s a terrorist attack, the sending of unsolicited emails to 300 people at a time with links to climate-alarmist videos, the changing of the words of your national anthem because “in all thy son’s command” can’t be interpreted in any generic sense and excludes half the nation, the hashtag campaigns to #bringbackourgirls… in the immortal words of Bill Burr (see around 3:52 in this clip);

She’s sitting there holding up those hashtags, “BringBackOurGirls””

Remember that hashtag #BringBackOurGirls.

That blew my mind, like why are you asking me that, I am a stand-up comedian. Like what am I going to do to get back the girls?

Why don’t you look across the dinner table, you see that guy? That is the leader of the free world; tell him to pick up a phone, call some NAVY Seals and solve it….What am I going to do?

Virtue signaling are all those symbolic gestures that in the end amount to nothing. They get nothing accomplished except… make it widely known to all your friends, families and peers that YOU CARE. You are a caring, empathic, wonderful human being. You are good and you are announcing it to the world. But there’s the whole crowd aspect of virtue signaling too that would explain in part why there always seems to be stampede like a herd on Facebook and Twitter and all the other social media sites to immediately proclaim your solidarity with the victims of this tragedy or that tragedy, like the most recent Orlando shootings. Proclaiming your sympathies and solidarity with gay people is the very least you can do, but I believe the great majority rush to do this as quickly as they can because then there is the inference that that’s it, they’re done. Their responsibility in the matter has ended. They have washed away or diluted their responsibility in the crowd they have joined by virtue signaling. It’s intellectually dishonest and morally bankrupt, but that is the society we are living in today. Take the easy road. As Mark Steyn so aptly puts it in this clip, most of society goes on frolicking in the fields, holding hands and singing about our wonderful lives, and the conservatives are the ones left to look at the world as it truly is and be labelled as the mean or racist or bigoted ones.

Conservatives are not innocent of virtue signaling, we certainly do our share of it. But we need to point it out whenever we see it and call people out on it, because only shaming people and pointing out the uselessness of symbolism over substance will provide at least a modicum of resistance to this increasing herd mentality. When you see the left contorting itself so that they can claim the Orlando shooting is an unfortunate result of the marginalization of two communities, gay and Muslim, you know you are seeing overt virtue signaling that will not accomplish anything other than make the situation worse.  We cannot seek out crowds to join that let us shirk responsibility for dealing with the root causes of problems just because it might make us seem harsh or uncaring.

Native Culture? It’s Killing Them.

There is this romantic notion in Canada and the US about indigenous peoples that has been perpetuated by that great disseminator of academic thought and historic accuracy, Hollywood. The Indian Brave is;

…peaceful, kills only to eat or to defend his family, and is not wasteful. The Brave is a spiritual, mystic guardian of the land who exists in harmony with, and as icon of America’s wilderness past, as if he were an eagle or a buffalo rather than human. He is often represented in picturesque nature, showcasing some “natural” skill admired for its primitive purity, like hunting buffalo or riding a horse. The Brave imagery usually includes excessive traditional dress (especially a splendid headdress), thereby reinforcing his flawless naturalness. As a mythic icon of the past, the Brave lacks humanity. Consequentially, the Brave is always shown as stoic, lacking any real emotion, especially humor. This section also includes imagery that romanticizes the traditional Native lifestyle since it is often a key part of Brave depictions.

The romantic notion that indigenous North American peoples were somehow pure and noble and had a culture on par with western cultures is killing people, not metaphorically, but literally. This misrepresentation and cultural relativism is now killing modern natives across Canada.

Cultural relativism is one of the key stones of the progressive left’s belief system and it is defined as such;

Cultural relativism is the principle of regarding the beliefs, values, and practices of a culture from the viewpoint of that culture itself. … In sociology, the principle is sometimes practiced to avoid cultural bias in research, as well as to avoid judging another culture by the standards of one’s own culture. For this reason, cultural relativism has been considered an attempt to avoid ethnocentrism. Cultural relativism is related to but often distinguished from moral relativism, the view that morality is relative to a standard, especially a cultural standard.

The bolding of words is mine.

So, when little Makayla Sault dies because her parents elected to use “traditional” treatments for her leukemia, instead of western medical treatments, what happens? We’re so cowed by political correctness, so flushed with the romantic notion of the noble Brave, so unwilling to break the 11th Commandment (Thou Shalt Not Judge) and declare these “traditional” treatments to be a load of bullshit, we do nothing and stand by while the little girl dies. One needs only go on Google and does a short five minute search to find all sorts of other similar tragic stories.

Oh, but wait. Here’s a hippie couple equally as evil, negligent and pie-in-the-sky retarded and they’re on trial (and rightly so). What’s the difference here? Race perhaps? As one commenter in the Lethbridge Herald article so aptly puts it:

“Children have a right to evidence-based medical care, not just prayer and useless folk remedies.”

Whoa, whoa. Apparently, Makayla Sault didn’t have that right. Because we’re in fact the worst opposite of being racist, we’re deferential. So when native leaders scream in the wake of the suicides in Attawapiskat, the shootings in La Loche, that these and other tragedies are the results of racism in Canada, it’s just the opposite. Canada has given natives plenty of sovereignty, plenty of cultural protections (to the point of promoting it as actually being Canadian culture), and most of all plenty, plenty of cash, to the tune of billions a year. According to the Calgary Herald:

…in 2013/14, Health Canada spent almost $1.1 billion on supplementary benefits such as dental care, vision care and pharmaceutical drugs for eligible First Nations and Inuit Canadians. That coverage is not required by treaties or by the Constitution. And most other Canadians must spend out-of-pocket or buy insurance for such items.

Something is not working with how we’ve approached natives in Canada and we’ve let the left and their insistence on cultural relativism dominate the discussion. When I see TV clips of Attawapiskat, I see a shit hole in the middle of nowhere, with dirt roads and run down modular houses that have boarded up windows, but teenage girls hanging around wearing tight designer jeans. I see boys wearing baseball caps with NBA logos. I see satellite dishes on every home. Jonathan Kay wrote a fantastic article that pointed out, sadly, the following:

Generations ago, aboriginal men in this part of Canada would hunt seal or caribou and come back from the hunt as celebrated providers. But the old skills required to live off the land are either dead or dying — and they’re unnecessary to modern life, in any event. On a tour of Attawapiskat with a former First Nations chief I learned that local homeowners lacked even the basic skills to keep up a pre-fab home, which is why the government has to keep replacing the buildings.

So they want to live in the middle of nowhere, as part of their cultural authenticity, but don’t even have the skills to practice their culture as they romantically remember it.

At some point, some politician has to risk getting labelled as a racist, has to brave the storm of political correctness and just say that enough is enough. You are either participants in our modern society or you are not. The left’s insistence in letting native leaders, willfully blind to the erosion of their backwards cultures in the face of modernity, sequester their own people into remote places, places without hope, all in the name of preserving some romantic notion about a proud people living off the land is killing them. The left are the true racists here.

David Suzuki’s Minority Report

There he goes again, suggesting (not for the first time) that we arrest Stephen Harper for his “criminal” inaction on climate change.

We’re not the best ones to make arguments against the whole climate change hysteria, there are plenty of excellent persons and blogs that are dedicated to that cause, and we defer to them.

But it boils down to four questions about the Climate Change debate.

  1.  Is Climate Change real?

Maybe.  Sure.  The earth has gone through a great number of climate change cycles during it’s existence, including several ice ages and several hot-house periods.  They’ve found alligator bones near the Arctic Circle… did those alligators drive there in their SUV’s?  But for the sake of argument here, let’s concede that the earth is in fact warming…. again.

2. Is Climate Change man-made?

This is where the IPCC term “anthropogenic global warming”  or AGW comes in, i.e. that man made “pollutants” (if you consider carbon dioxide a pollutant) is the main cause of Climate Change.  This is more contentious.  You may get us to concede that AGW is a contributor, but to what extent?  What percentage of our current global warming can be directly attributed to our carbon dioxide emissions?  There is no answer that quantifies it.   But again, let’s concede for the sake of argument that we are contributing some appreciable amount to the current global warming.

3.  Are the effects of Climate Change catastrophic?

Here’s where we go rogue; no.  Virtually every IPCC prediction for the doomsday effects of AGW on the earth, from the early part of the century to recently have been false.  Global sea levels – more or less the same… no flooding of Miami or islands in the South Pacific.  Himalaya glaciers melted by 2013?  Just the opposite in fact,  ice caps have increased, not only in the Himalayas but in parts of the Arctic and Antarctic.  Global temperatures have more or less held steady for the past 18 years, despite claims to the contrary about the “hottest year on record” et al.  Climate models have failed to accurately predict future conditions thus far, so why are we trusting that they will get it right eventually?  The effects of Climate Change will not be catastrophic or something that we cannot adapt to.

4.  Do you trust the government to stop Climate Change?

Hell, no.  And last time we checked, there was no WORLD GOVERNMENT that could force China, India, Russia and Brazil to hold their carbon output.  Canada is a mere 1.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and of that 0.7% was attributed to the oil sands, which is slowing down given global gas prices.

So, David Suzuki is an unfortunate example of that poor soul who shouts into an echo chamber and thinks his own thoughts said out loud are validation of his dumb ideas.  He cannot predict the effects of climate change, so what are we arresting Harper for?  And Harper was supposed to do what to stop global warming?

Go away old man.

On The Donald

Let’s get this out of the way; Donald Trump is not a conservative.  He’s a liberal.

  • He’s a protectionist, who is opposed to free trade.
  • He’s used government mechanisms to expropriate properties for his development projects.
  • He’s benefited from doing business in government closed markets and highly regulated industries (casinos).
  • He’s pro-choice and been married 3 times.  Seriously, when’s the last time  that you think he’s been in a church of any kind of his own volition?
  • He’s donated to Democrats in the past, including Hillary Clinton when she ran for Senator in New York.  He’s explained that away as “the cost of doing business” i.e. he’s operated in those areas of our economy where greasing politicians for favours or influence is seen as normal.   Doing so is tacit acceptance that government has a role in picking winners and losers in business, which conservatives should reject.

And that’s just off the top of our head.  So the fact that he may win the Republican nomination is just further indication of conservatism’s ongoing fall from grace.  This is not the man to arrest the fall.  At best he is a Traditionalist in the old Tory vein, but when your big government proclivities don’t overlap with libertarians and result in a strong advocacy of free markets, then you’re a crony capitalist, just like every Russian or Arab oligarch that got obscenely rich by government largess and uses government to crush competition.

And when you cross a liberal with an anti-immigrant/nationalist you get… a fascist.

Next post we’ll discuss then why, in view of what Donald Trump is and represents, Kevin O’Leary is a bad idea for Canadian politics.

Evidence-Based Policy Making Part II

Our new Prime Minister is intent on adding 25,000 Syrian refugees by year end to fulfill a campaign promise.

Untitled

By contrast the US, a country 10 times our size, is only adding 10,000 refugees… over the next year.

Justin Trudeau and Liberals trumpeted during the election that they were going to champion “evidence-based policy making” which is a supposed non-partisan approach to creating policy that is independent of ideology.  It’s something the left trots out all the time, starting way back with the Tony Blair government in England, but in reality it’s selectively applied and is intended merely to shut off debate, because who can debate facts?

Selectively applied?  Well, certainly there’s little “evidence-based” policy making at work with respect to the Syrian refugees.

There are fairly reliable reports that as many as 3-4% of Syrian refugees are sympathetic to ISIS and all that entails, namely a fundamentalist interpretation and enforcement of their religion, an Islamic supremacist mindset.

If for the sake of argument you say that number is closer to 1%, of 25,000 expedited refugees that means 250 would be ISIS sympathizers.  Even 0.5% would mean 125.  It doesn’t take that many to cause quite a bit of carnage, as Paris has shown.  Even then, do we want 125 Islamists walking around Thornhill and Mississauga helping propagate an incubating environment that has already seen many Canadian born youth embracing Islamism?

So where is the evidence-based policy making now?  Facts would suggest that a more reasonable, controlled and cautious approach to what and how many Syrian refugees are brought into our country.

Getting Older

This is of some interest.

Being a conservative in a predominantly liberal culture, a lot of thought goes into what influences culture and moves the needle in that regard.

To borrow from Stephen Harper’s analogy that he used in a talk with his caucus way back in 2008, culture is like a massive ocean liner; heading in one direction, almost impossible to change course.  Yet tiny almost imperceptible adjustments in its course could result in large changes in destination years down the road.

But there are three things that can change a culture, and in a relatively short period of time; technology, catastrophe and demographics.

When you look at this map and the article, it’s obvious that here in Canada we have a problem – a median age of 41.7 years is not a good thing, especially in a country (and province if you live in Ontario) that has heavily borrowed from future generations, which based on the median age looks like they might not be big enough in size to cover our current generation’s debts.

Germany is the oldest country, 46 years is the median age, and they’ve recently decided to address this lack of youth by saying they’re going to bring in a million Syrians at a cost of $23 billion or thereabouts.  That’ll change German culture, for sure.  But they’ve almost no choice in the matter; like most European countries, they’re heavily in debt with no future generations of Germans to pay the bills.  So they decide to invest in bringing in young people from other countries to pay those bills… if in fact they’re going to be interested in doing that.  It’s cultural suicide in the name of paying for cradle to grave statist benefits.
